Safety Leadership - From Constraint to Facilitation

Event Date:
July 19, 2016 11:45am
Presenter:
Ron Gantt, Mechanical Engineer, CSP, ARM, CET

Traditional models of the safety profession focus on management and control. The underlying
principle is that our systems would be safe if it were not for all these people mucking it up with
their lack of concern for safety! So we build in processes to constrain behavior through policies
and procedures. We seek and destroy all cases of human error and violations. Our motto is “we
protect you, from you, in spite of you” and then we wonder why trust is lacking in our
organizations.

This line of thinking flies in the face of a simple truth – deep down everyone wants to be safe.
Nobody comes to work to get hurt or killed. So the problem is not that employees do not care
about safety, it is that they do not associate what we are trying to do with their safety. This
presentation discusses the latest in thinking regarding human and organizational performance
and Safety-II to provide attendees with strategies to tap into the innate motivation of employees
to transform the culture of the organization with a focus on moving from management to
leadership, from constraint to facilitation.
